Today is focusing on breast reconstruction.

Once it’s been established that you’ll be undergoing a mastectomy (whether single or double), you’ll be faced with various options for reconstruction, and even the option of not undergoing reconstruction at all.

Your surgeon will talk you through your breast reconstruction options & it’s important to consider these carefully.

For this first post of the day, I’m posting another guest blog (link in bio) from the fabulous @drtashag, breast cancer surgeon. In this blog post, Dr Tasha explains the various types of breast reconstruction.

Next up, a post about the importance of shared decision making in relation to your breast reconstruction options. And then later today I’ll be posting some information about remaining flat and not undergoing reconstruction.

Exercise is good for you. We all know this. It benefits both your physical and mental health. But what if you have had breast cancer?

There is emerging evidence suggesting that regular exercise can reduce cancer recurrence and improves outcome post treatment.

Cancer treatment can be challenging and with it carries wide ranging side effects. These may include functional issues post surgery, to fatigue around chemotherapy to changes in body composition with endocrine treatment. Exercise can help with all of these and if you want to learn more, then this is the podcast episode for you.

Thank you Dr Tasha @drtashag for inviting Tom Cowan, one of our exercise physiologists who works closely with those affected by cancer to discuss this important topic with you. Tom’s work has been recognised by Public Health England and the Faculty for Sport and Exercise Medicine UK, who selected him to become a member of their Cancer and Exercise expert panel.

Tom prescribes specific exercises tailored to the individual and understands the challenges faced by patients, either during or after treatment.

Topics covered include:

✨How to beat fatigue (a common side effect of treatment)
✨How moderate exercise can boost our immune system
✨What moderate intensity exercise looks like and what tools we can use to determine what this would be for individuals
✨The various exercises we can do before – during – and after treatment
✨Why we tend to focus on cardiovascular exercises and neglect the other important piece of the jigsaw which is strength training
✨The importance of bone health and exercises we can do to improve this
✨Exercises that can help with lymphoedema
In this podcast, Tom shares tips and tricks of what you can do to to incorporate exercise into your daily life.

Guest blog from a breast cancer surgeon

Kicking off the focus week on breast cancer surgery, is this amazing guest blog from a breast cancer surgeon, the wonderful Dr 塔莎·甘达米哈达(Tasha Gandamihardja) @drtashag (link in bio).

This blog is the perfect starting point for anyone who has been told that they need breast cancer surgery. She explains the types of surgery and why some people are advised to have a lumpectomy whilst others a mastectomy. It’s easy and straightforward to read, written at the perfect level for anyone in a state of shock and with no medical background...

“ Below I will give an overview of the types of surgeries available, the reasons behind their recommendations and the different factors you may need to consider before going ahead with your surgery.”

If you don’t read anything else that I post this week - read this!

Dr Tasha also runs an excellent breast cancer website and is host of the brilliant podcast, My Breast Health which covers all sort of breast cancer topics. I highly recommend you check them out and also check out Dr Tasha on Instagram的 and 推特.

Next up, the importance of educating yourself to make an informed decision on your surgery.

Kath Elliott被诊断出患有乳腺癌 Kath Elliott被诊断出患有乳腺癌ar ago.

Kath is still processing all that has happened over the past 12 months. In this podcast episode, we talked about how she coped with her diagnosis, how her family supported her through chemotherapy and the difficult task of telling her three boys about her cancer.

The cancer diagnosis has made Kath become more reflective about her life, mindful of the present and hopeful for the future. She has changed the way she lives her life in a positive way. As an example, Kath decided to stop drinking alcohol and has felt the benefits straight away.

She tries to find joy in everything she does, and her practice of daily gratitude has helped Kath immensely. Meditation and journaling also continue to be instrumental in her healing.

It was an absolutely inspirational conversation and I hope you enjoy it too.

Kath can be found @healingbreastcancer. She also has a blog at www.kathrynelliott.net.
